How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the local tip percentage and add it to the total. For a 20% tip on a $50 bill, that is $50 × 0.20 = $10, giving $60. The percentage is the part that varies by country — this calculator applies the customary local rate rather than assuming a single global number.
What percentage should you tip?
It depends entirely on where you are and what the service is. In the United States a sit-down restaurant is typically 18–20% of the pre-tax bill; in Japan the customary tip is zero. Pick the country and service above to get the local figure instead of a default.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Where a tip is customary, the convention is to calculate on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is generous rather than expected. Enter the pre-tax subtotal for the standard result.
Do you tip on a service charge that is already included?
Usually not. When a bill already carries a service charge — common in Brazil, the UAE, and many upscale venues in Europe and Asia — that charge is the tip. Adding another full tip on top is double-tipping. Check the country guide for how service charges work locally.
